Troy coaching candidates: Who can build off the success of Jon Sumrall?
The Trojans have the only head coach opening, and they are casting a wide net.
Troy has a head coach opening, after Jon Sumrall left for Tulane. Sumrall went 23-4 in two seasons with the Trojans, elevating the program and making this an attractive job.
We’re told that Troy is casting a wide net, with AD Brent Jones conducting roughly a dozen Zoom interviews before narrowing his list down. Troy is not believed to be using a search firm. And while former college head coaches such as Bill Clark or Skip Holtz might make sense given their ties to the state, we are told that neither is involved with this search, either.
Let’s take a look at who could ultimately land the job.
Greg Gasparato, Troy DC/interim head coach. Gasparato led Troy to a top-10 scoring defense and top-15 overall defense in his first year with the Trojans. If Troy wants some stability to build off Sumrall’s success, Gasparato could be an option. He has had success as a linebackers coach at Louisville and as co-DC at Army as well.
