Tax docs: Notre Dame paid Marcus Freeman more than $7.4 million in 2023
The school's tax forms reveal its highest-compensated employees, a sports-heavy list.
Marcus Freeman earned more than $7.4 million in his second season as Notre Dame’s head football coach, federal tax documents show, a figure that is nearly $1 million more than he earned in his first season leading the Irish.
Freeman’s compensation was revealed through the school’s Form 990 for the 2023-24 academic year. As a private school, Notre Dame’s employment contracts are not public, but the school does list the compensation of its highest-paid employees on its tax forms.
New to that list for the reporting period is men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry, who earned $3,261,060 in his first year leading the program. Shrewsberry’s compensation was the third-highest that was listed, behind Freeman and school vice president and chief investment officer Michael Donovan, who earned more than $3.9 million during the reporting period, which covers July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.
By comparison, former Irish men’s basketball head coach Mike Brey was credited with $2,896,449 in his final season leading the program, according to last year’s tax forms.
