Michigan coaching candidates: The champs have an opening

Jim Harbaugh finished the job. He will be tough to top. But this is Michigan, and the Wolverines will have plenty of good options.

The winningest program in the history of college football has a head-coaching position open. After three years of NFL flirtations, Jim Harbaugh is finally bound for the pros, as he is set to be hired by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Harbaugh did what he came to his alma mater to do, flipping the program on its head and ultimately flipping the script on Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten, winning three straight games against the Buckeyes, winning three straight conference titles and, at last, winning a national title in 2023.

He may leave a storm in his wake — the NCAA is knocking on Michigan’s door for two separate scandals — but he also leaves proving that the Wolverines can and should win big in this day and age.

So, who succeeds Harbaugh? Michigan may not have to look far.
