Fortuna Files: Why hasn't North Carolina recruited better?

Everyone keeps saying this is the best job in college basketball. No argument here. But the recruiting rankings have told a different story for a long time.

Some quick college basketball thoughts ahead of the final weekend of the season (tear emoji):

1. Here are the 247Sports rankings of Duke’s last three recruiting classes (2023-25): 2, 1, 1.

2. Here are North Carolina’s: 32, 8, 5.

3. In the five cycles since Roy Williams retired (2022-26), Duke’s average recruiting ranking is 1.2. North Carolina’s is 18.

4. Is that a Hubert Davis problem? No. In the final eight years that Williams was at UNC, Duke’s average recruiting ranking was 2.25. UNC’s was 19.62.

5. That last number is a little skewed by the Tar Heels’ No. 70 ranking in 2015, but even if you remove that year from the equation, UNC’s average ranking during Williams’ other final seven years is 12.42.
