Florida State said the quiet part out loud — again — on Thursday morning by announcing that its board of trustees will meet virtually at 10 a.m. on Friday.
And by announcing, we mean it in the most literal sense of the word: The school’s athletics communications staff sent out an email advisory about the board meeting, a nearly unprecedented display to command everyone’s attention.
Realignment matters almost always happen behind closed doors. The old saying goes that the worst thing that can happen to a deal such as a conference move is to shed a little sunlight on it, killing the deal.
Instead, the Seminoles are inviting an inferno that has commanded the entire college sports world’s attention entering a holiday weekend.
But what’s the play here? Word has been percolating in the industry for the better part of a week now that FSU was ready to do something — anything — imminently in light of all of its summer posturing and in light of its undefeated football team’s exclusion from the College Football Playoff.
Calls around the country this week have painted a cloudy picture for FSU’s hopes to leave the ACC.
Then again, the idea of Oregon and Washington getting into the Big Ten didn’t look promising until both schools were actually admitted in.
