Duke coaching candidates: Who can build off the success of Mike Elko?
Elko wasted no time showing that you can win at Duke, which means the program should be in strong position to land a good coach.
Duke is open for the second time in three years, this time under different circumstances than the last time. The Blue Devils are using Parker Executive Search to assist with the hire.
Who can build off Mike Elko’s success? Let’s look at some potential candidates:
Curt Cignetti, JMU. The 62-year-old Cignetti has been successful everywhere he’s been, as he has JMU at 11-1 this year, just the Dukes’ second campaign at the FBS level. Cignetti is 52-9 in five years at JMU, and his career record across three schools is 52-9. He’s a Pittsburgh native and WVU grad with strong ties across the East Coast and in particularly the Carolinas, having coached at Davidson, NC State and Elon, where he was head coach for two years. Cignetti was part of Nick Saban’s first four staffs at Alabama, too, as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.
